Load Collision Protection for Cranes Using Lidar Technology

In dynamic work environments, protecting against load collisions is crucial. Our Cranium system uses state-of-the-art Lidar sensors to reliably detect potential hazards and avoid them with precision.

How Does the Load Collision Protection Work?

Cranium continuously scans the area around the crane load using high-resolution Lidar sensors. From this data, the system generates a precise 3D map of the surroundings. This map is analyzed in real time to:

Cranium continuously scans the area around the crane load using high-resolution Lidar sensors. From this data, the system generates a precise 3D map of the surroundings. This map is analyzed in real time to:

  • Detect dynamic obstacles such as people, vehicles, or moving components
  • Automatically maintain safety distances
  • Proactively prevent collisions

This results in an intelligent, predictive movement profile of the crane load — a key component for Soft Landing, meaning the smooth, controlled placement of loads near obstacles or target positions.

In practice, the use of slow travel near obstacles has proven effective: this allows the system to withdraw from potentially risky situations in a controlled manner, without coming to an abrupt stop.

Technical Facts About Load Collision Protection

  • Dynamic Obstacle Detection

Detects moving obstacles such as vehicles or people in real time.

  • Precise Distance Measurement

Centimeter-accurate detection for safe approach and braking.

  • Soft Landing Support

Gentle placement of the load even in tight or hard-to-see areas.

  • Slow Motion During Obstruction

Controlled slow movement instead of sudden stops in high-risk situations.

  • Object Classification

Distinguishes between people, containers, vehicles, and structures.

  • Coupling Detection

Detects when, for example, trailers are unintentionally lifted along with the load.

Every terminal is different. We’ll show you which modules fit your existing infrastructure and how you can automate step by step.

Real-World Application Example

Intermodal Terminal

Usage

Safe crane movements during container handling between trailers, semi-trailers, and ground positions.

Functionalities

  • Detection of maneuvering vehicles or parked containers
  • Detection of unintentional lifting of a trailer
  • Real-time 3D environment analysis for immediate motion adjustment

Advantage

Reduction of operating errors, protection against costly accidents, and increased operational safety in dynamic terminal operations.
